How Do Affirmations Work?

While practicing affirmations is not a miracle pill, it works by training you to think, feel, and therefore act differently. The practice allows you to control and direct your thoughts towards more empowering and positive vibrations. 

The subconscious mind is your operating system and stores your programs, memories, beliefs, and habits. It absorbs the external environment and learns by habituation. According to stem cell biologist Dr. Bruce H. Lipton, we spend 95% of our time in our subconscious mind and 5% in our conscious mind.

So basically, the subconscious mind controls your entire life. If you ever want to change anything, you have to impress on the subconscious mind.

Modern science now validates that our brain is wired for growth. Neuroplasticity and epigenetics studies prove that our brain can fire new neuropathways when we learn something and well into our old age. 

How to Use New Year Affirmations

You can practice affirmations in various ways, but we’ll discuss the three most popular and effective ways to practice. You can (1) repeat affirmations aloud in front of the mirror, (2) write them in a journal, (3) repeat them in your head, or practice all three simultaneously.

Choose anywhere between three to five affirmations below and write or say each affirmation ten times.

The most important thing to mention when doing affirmations is you have to conjure up the emotional experience. For instance, while you are saying it aloud and if you want to feel freedom, bring up the energy of freedom. Or, if you want to feel confident, bring up confidence. And you’ll be golden if you can embody the emotional experience throughout your day. 

Furthermore, the best time to impress the subconscious mind is (1) when you wake up, (2) before you go to bed, (3) directly after meditations. The idea is to get your body and mind in a relaxed state so the affirmations can absorb better. 

Affirmations are a way to hack the brain, but you can’t hack the practice. Since we’ve mentioned that the subconscious mind learns by habituation, the only way around affirmations is persistence, consistency, and repeated effort.

So keep your eye on the prize and trust that, with time and effort, you will see long-term gain and growth.

Lastly, it might feel strange the first few times you practice affirmations. This is perfectly normal. It’s unreasonable to expect ourselves to feel joy when all we currently feel is unworthiness.

But I promise it will get easier with time and don’t feel bad if you have trouble bringing up positive feelings right away. So keep at it, have fun, play, and don’t be too hard on yourself.

How Long Does it Take for Affirmations to Work?

Affirmations take about 21 days to see results and 66 days for the habit to settle in. That’s if it’s your first time working with affirmations. Set out ten minutes a day and let the new energy build and create momentum in you.

Additionally, affirmations get easier once you figure out your process. If you get good at believing in yourself, pretty soon, it will only take one day to align with any new belief you choose to believe.

How to Stay Consistent and Keep Motivated

The best way to stay consistent is by scheduling time in your calendar and adding it to your morning and night routine. Habit researchers such as James Clear, S.J. Scott, and B.J. Fogg recommend habit-stacking

The idea is to pair your new behavior with a solid habit that you already have. For instance, you could do this directly after waking up, right after brushing your teeth, in the shower, after meditation, or right before lunch.

Clustering up your habits increases the chance of you following through instead of randomly scheduling your habits, which could cause you to forget about them altogether.
