How do you get into alignment with your true self?
Aligning with your true self means traveling deeper into the center of your heart, trusting its intelligence, and manifesting your life from there while letting what doesn’t feel right, what feels false, or what no longer serves your life anymore gently fall away.
The path of the heart requires courage, patience, and an element of openness and curiosity to explore your inner world freely.
In writing this article, I realized that there are many ways to tackle this question, which makes sense given the many spiritual traditions, religions, healing therapies, and schools of psychology that are all trying to help us understand the human condition and find answers for our lives. There really is no one-size-fits-all approach.
I’ll try to keep it brief as this is an online article, but know that aligning with your true self is a process, and technically, you already are aligned with your true self.
It’s more of a process of letting your deepest self push its way up and outwards, shedding old skin, and letting the most honest and vulnerable aspects of yourself—your truth—rise and lay bare.
First, Let’s Get Back to the Basics of What We Are

So, we first need to answer what we mean by “true.” And if there is a “true self,” there must also be a “false self.” What is the false self?
Then, we also hear about the true Self with a capital S. What is that?
In Vedic and Yogic traditions, there is a true Self with a capital “S,” which also means the “soul,” and a “self” with a lowercase “s,” which is the ego identity.
And in psychology or everyday common talk, we use “true self” and “false self.”
So, we see that there seems to be agreement that we have two parts: a true self and a false self / a true Self (soul) and a self (ego identity).
Okay, let’s add one more thing.
We also hear people say mind, body, and soul. Why do spiritual and holistic traditions use that?
Because we are a three-part being of mind, body, and soul. We have a mind. We have a body. But we ARE the soul (true Self).
Let’s forget about the body for a minute.
So, if the “soul” and “true Self” are the same.
Then that means the “mind,” the “false self,” and the “self” with a lowercase “s” (ego identity) are the same.
Or at least the schools of thought suggest that we all inherently have a more “true” part (the soul, the deeper self, the true Self, or true self) to us and a more false part (ego identity).
(There’s a little more to that than what I explained, but I wanted to add that in case anyone is confused about “true self” versus “true Self.”)
So then, what is the false self?
- Doubt
- Old past conditioning and programming (i.e., limiting beliefs)
- The ego (i.e., pride, arrogance, denial, low self-worth, fear)
- Self-sabotage
- Old baggage
- Triggers
- Your experiences
- Your identity
- Resistance
Now, that doesn’t mean that the false self isn’t real and that you don’t have to deal with it; it’s just that it is not technically who or what you are.
Then what does that leave us with? What is the true self? What is at the center of your heart?
LOVE.
What Does It Mean to Align With Your True Self?

The truth of what you are is love. The mind will tell us otherwise with its limiting beliefs, fears, and past painful experiences, but we’ve determined that the mind is not actually you.
It’s something that you have to help you in this life. You are love, the soul, the true Self, and the operant power of your life. You control and manage your mind.
To align with your true self means to align with the frequency of love and the vibrations that derive from love.
- Abundance
- Peace
- Freedom
- Gratitude
- Joy and Bliss
- Compassion and Forgiveness
- Surrender
- Connectedness
- Openness and Expansion
That means loving yourself, doing what you love, being with someone you love, working somewhere you love, and spending your time and energy with people and on activities you love.
Additionally, remember that your body is your first home, and in your being—love is home.
Like our biological bodies, which have a normal temperature regulation of 98.6°F (37°C)—love is your home vibrational frequency.
It is your true nature. Your divine essence. Your soul. Your true Self. It is your most natural and purest state of consciousness.
It is stable, consistent, reliable, and has always been with you.
So, the work of aligning to your true self is to search internally for vibrations of love and begin aligning everything internally and externally to these vibrations.
To do that, you can internally and externally:
- Follow your heart
- Follow your bliss
- Follow the path of least resistance
These are all clues you’re on the right track and path.
Examples and Clues that You Are Misaligned:
- A subtle and gnawing feeling that something is off
- Your heart sinks every time you go to work
- You feel like you’re dying spiritually / energetically
- People and environments that close you up and contract your energy
- A feeling of drowning
- Abusive environments
- Relationships that feel like a one-way street
What Does Being Aligned to Your True Self Feel Like?

Alignment with your true self feels like what some people have described as coming home to Self or settling in your own skin.
First, you must internally find what love and freedom feel like and take care of yourself in a way that always directs you back home. Remember, love is home.
However, on a practical note, externally, you’ll most likely be in the career (or calling) you want to be in or will be making moves to manifest a new career.
You’re in the relationship you want to be in, or trust that manifesting your ideal partner is around the corner. If you’re single and prefer to be, you have a great relationship with yourself.
My direct experience with aligning with my true self:
- Full Acceptance: I surrendered to the divine flow, am less resistant, and have an understanding that life is a co-creation. The soul truly does have a plan. Learning to listen to the Universe and work with what my life tells me has brought me greater pleasure, fun, and satisfaction.
- Effortlessness: More ease and flow.
- Focus: Focusing on what truly matters, like prioritizing well-being and joy.
- Connection: A deep connection to my own life and the part I play in the Universe.
- Confidence and Self-trust: I know I can navigate life well because I know how to navigate my inner life.
- Self-sufficiency: I know how to meet my own emotional needs, such as seeking understanding inwardly instead of outwardly.
- Self-love: I have a great relationship with myself. For example, I know devaluing myself doesn’t serve me or others in the long run.
- Reconciliation: Completing and finalizing old wounds that were holding me back and forgiving myself and others for past mistakes.
- Inner security: I experience more days of calmness and inner stability. I can still move quickly and be fast-paced, but I’m less internally chaotic. But I had to slow down first.
- Emotional Regulation: If something upsets me, I know how to return home to love quickly. You get better at making peace, forgiving, and letting go.
- Freedom: The air quality is so much better! Breathe. Breathe. Breathe.
10 Tips to Get Into Alignment With Your True Self

1. Self-Honesty
Self-honesty is incredibly important for growth and the path to the true self.
When we lie to ourselves, even tiny white lies, when we look the other way because we’re afraid of the consequences or how it will make us feel, we slowly chip away at our self-trust, creating more doubt, internal separation, and emptiness.
For example, you might say, “I’m fine, I’m fine,” but truthfully, you’re not fine inside.
We betray and disconnect from our source and intuition and never resolve our internal conflicts. The only way to fully trust yourself is to remain loyal, honest, and truthful with yourself, even when it hurts.
After all, we call it the TRUE self.
2. Study Emotions and Consciousness
The first tip for aligning with your true self is to know your emotions and energy system well.
Studying the range of emotions will help you navigate your feelings, use them as messages and clues, and know when to raise your vibration.
Here are two articles that explain the range of emotions. Both are supportive tools for spiritual seekers and manifestors.

3. Self-Love

Self-love is not a hippie thing. It is not a girl thing. It is not a selfish thing. It is not a New Age thing. It is a human thing. Don’t listen to people who negate self-love.
All true spiritual principles direct you towards vibrations of love, such as acceptance, forgiveness, compassion, and more.
You need self-love to feel good about who you are, believe you can change, and be a productive, healthy, and functioning human being in society.
It makes you a better partner, family member, coworker, and better at whatever you desire.
If your self-love tank is low, focus on this area. Self-love is the foundation of manifesting and will support you in manifesting your desires.
4. Forgive and Let Go
If you are holding on to past wounds, hurts, and resentments, forgiving and letting go is a (gentle) must. It is the final stage of healing and how to vibrationally align with your true self.
The Law of Attraction states that “like attracts like,” you attract to yourself that of similar vibration.
Aligning with your true self will help you attract what is genuinely suitable for you.
Neville Goddard, the creator of the Law of Assumption, says the best state of consciousness to manifest in is a continuous state of forgiveness, which is the spirit of Christ.
In this state, you embody love and freedom, which makes you magnetic and an unstoppable manifestor. Free to attract all the goodness into your life.

5. Self-Introspection
The fourth way to align with your true self is self-introspection.
Self-introspection is the simplest and most classic method to know your true self. No money is needed here—just you and time.

6. Find a Childhood Photo

Your true self is you at around five years old.
Long ago, an art teacher once instructed me to get pictures of my 5-year-old self, paste them all over my wall, and stare at them.
Umm…porque? Why?
She stated, “You need to become more spiritual and connect with yourself!”
At the time, I was confused. But, of course, fifteen years later, she was right. It was the best advice, and I’ll never forget it.
Your five-year-old picture is the most powerful way to find your true self. Before the ego develops, this is you at your purest!
Carry it in your purse and wallet, put your picture on your phone, stare at it, and remember that cute, adorable, lovable, pure, and free person that you are!
7. Solitude and Alone Time
Alone and solitude time is essential to align with your true self. If you are undergoing a spiritual awakening, you’ll naturally crave it.
Alone time goes hand-in-hand with self-introspection. During this time, you can sort through your psyche, release what isn’t you anymore, think about where you want to go from this point forward, and so forth.
Don’t underestimate time with yourself. You become your best friend and begin to love yourself on very deep levels.
Additionally, it’s important to distinguish between isolation and solitude.
In my experience, when I isolated myself, it was marred with an undertone of shame, hopelessness, and self-rejection. It was a reaction to depression.
Conversely, solitude is a choice (not a reaction) with an intention for self-introspection, spiritual growth, releasing old wounds, raising your vibration, making potential life changes, and finding a connection to your true self and the Universe.
Solitude is more about finding a deep connection, while isolation is disconnecting from the world.
If you feel isolated, please call on friends, family, or a mental health professional for connection and support.
8. Prioritize Joy and Well-being

Decide to prioritize your joy and well-being.
Once you decide your well-being and happiness are priorities, you’ll intuitively know how to care for yourself. You’ll instinctively know what’s right for you and what’s not.
This was a significant shift and my favorite! It unlocks levels of freedom, and your true self will begin to show up more and more.
9. Meditation and Prayer
Of course, this list wouldn’t be complete without meditation and prayer.
I know you’ve heard it before, but to get to know your true self, you must find methods to calm down and transcend the ego mind.
As Eckhart Tolle puts it, “You are not your mind.”

He scientifically explains the different states of consciousness, from rock-bottom states like shame ascending to enlightened states like those of ascended spiritual masters.
He explains how intellectualism can block one from experiencing higher forms of love.
So meditation or prayer is essential in finding your true self.

10. Connect to Your Intuition

Intuition is the small, tiny voice spiritual teachers refer to and remind us to listen to, but we repeatedly dismiss it until one day, it finally clicks.
Your intuition operates at the level of the soul. When you align with your intuitive knowing and trust yourself, you align with your true self. If you want to connect more with your intuition, meditation practices and quieting your thoughts will help it become stronger and louder.
