In astronomy, a lunar cycle is approximately 29.5 days (28 days sidereal)—the time it takes to go from one new moon to the next new moon. There are 12 lunations in a given calendar year. However, approximately every 2.5 years, there are 13 lunations. So, one month will have two full moons; the second full moon is called a blue moon.
