First, What is Visualization?
Visualization is a mental process in which you use your imagination to form clear mental images and ideas in your mind’s eye. The word “imagination” comes from the Latin verb “imaginari,” meaning “to picture oneself.” It is our mind’s creative potential and is also considered the power of the mind.
Visualization comes naturally to us. Our thoughts and emotions are connected to internal images and memories, and we unconsciously visualize throughout the day without giving it too much thought.
For instance, as you work through your daily tasks, you’re likely imagining the next task or the scene of yourself getting off work, maybe anticipating traffic or imagining what you want to eat for dinner.
Additionally, visualization is not only limited to images. It starts with a mental picture, but our five senses are inextricably interconnected, so conjuring mental images will intrinsically evoke your other senses: smell, taste, hearing, and touch, as well as thoughts and feelings.
What is Creative Visualization?

Creative visualization involves visualizing your goals and desires as though they have already happened or are in the process of happening to manifest the life you want.
It is a bit like daydreaming but controlled and with purpose and intent. Essentially, you are training your mind to think, feel, believe, and act as the person who already has your desire.
Creative visualization is based on the Law of Attraction, which suggests that what we predominantly feel and think about is what we become and attract into our lives.
You can use creative visualization to manifest anything you want, from confidence to good grades, a fulfilling career, love, and more.
Shakti Gawain popularized this method in 1978 with her best-selling book Creative Visualization: Use the Power of Your Imagination to Create What You Want in Life.
I highly recommend this book for learning more about creative visualization. It’s a quick read—simple, practical, and easy to digest.
Does Our Mind Really Affect Our Reality?

Yes, your mind creates your reality. Your mind is like a paintbrush that you use to paint your reality, and you are the painter.
“Your mind is a paintbrush, your imagination is a canvas, and your thoughts are your masterpiece.
Your heart is a paintbrush, your desires are a canvas, and your actions are your masterpiece.
Your soul is a paintbrush, your world is a canvas, and your life is your masterpiece.”
― Matshona Dhliwayo
To deeply understand creative visualization and how it creates our reality, we must understand a few natural laws that govern the Universe.
The first law is the Law of Attraction, which states that like attracts like, meaning we attract our predominant vibration into our lives.
Second, the Law of Reflection (or Correspondence) states that the material universe is a mirror reflecting your inner world to you.
So, how you think and feel about yourself (self-concept) attracts situations, people, and objects of a similar frequency to you. For instance, if you feel unlovable, you will constantly attract situations and people that mirror this to you.
Most of us think that we are at the mercy of the Universe, but actually, the Universe is at our mercy. The Universe’s job is to reflect to us what is happening internally and guide us back inward.
However, it’s not about superficial positivity, either. Positivity, of course, helps your well-being and manifestations, but it goes beyond that. It’s more about your beliefs.
This brings us to the last law—the Law of Assumption, which states that what you assume is true creates your reality.
Form follows our mind. The seed of your manifestation starts within.
It first takes shape in your mind and then takes form in the 3D material universe.
Benefits of Creative Visualization
The benefits of creative visualization are endless, whether you want to manifest something immaterial like confidence or material like a new home.
Most people don’t have what they want or the life they desire because of trauma, resistance, limiting beliefs, blocks, and more.
The subconscious mind is your past. It is a collection of your memories, experiences, and habits, and plays a crucial role in manifesting your life.
What you see in your current, present-day reality is the sum of your past. So, to make any necessary deep, long-lasting change, we need to plant new internal seeds.
Here are different ways creative visualization can benefit your life.
- More confidence
- Embody self-love
- Emotional healing and resolve
- Attracting true love
- Actualizing your dreams and goals
- Rewrite your entire life story
- Use creative visualization as a mental rehearsal tool for better grades or public performances.
Quick Intro on Brainwave Frequency for Creative Visualization
When we visualize, we aim to relax our minds to alpha and theta brain waves. These states benefit our visualizations because alpha is the gateway to our subconscious, and theta is our subconscious.
If you’re a Neville Goddard fan, this is the state he calls “State Akin to Sleep.” It is a relaxed state in which the mind is calm and feels like you’re drifting off to sleep or deep meditation.

In alpha and theta waves, your mind can easily absorb any information you program it with. Think of your mind like a stove cooking a pot of soup stock.
Beta, our conscious waking state, is like being on high heat with the soup boiling and bubbling.
When we cook a pot of soup stock and want the ingredients to absorb flavors well, we turn the heat down to a low simmer and sometimes leave it overnight. Simmering at low temperatures helps the ingredients infuse with each other, creating a more concentrated flavor.
The soup metaphor is analogous to our mind’s receptivity; when you turn your frequency down to alpha and theta waves, the information or visualization you feed yourself with can easily absorb and saturate your system.
Another fun fact is that children can learn and absorb information quickly because their brain waves are predominantly in theta and alpha until they are about 12 years old.
From 0 to 24 months, they are in delta waves, 2 to 6 years in theta waves, and 6 to 12 years in alpha waves. From 12 years onward, beta waves (the ego-separate identity) fully kick in.
Indeed, our inner child is always with us!
How to Visualize in 9 Practical Steps

- Clarify Your Goal: The first step is to clarify your goal and write it down in a manifestation journal as though you already have your manifestation.
- Find Quiet Time: Next, find a quiet and comfortable place free from distractions so you can relax and focus your attention on visualizing.
- Get Centered: Next, find a comfortable position, like lying down or sitting upright.
- Relax and Clear Your Energy: Next, relax and clear your energy. Use any relaxation techniques that you enjoy. If you don’t have any, you can do a few neck stretches and head rolls to release tension from your body, then take a few deep breaths and yawns to relax the body further.
- Bring Your Attention Inwards: Now, bring your attention and senses inward and focus your energy internally.
- Visualize Your Desire: Begin visualizing your desire in your mind’s eye as if it has already been achieved. Make it as clear and vivid as possible, and call in your other four senses if applicable.
- Feel the Feelings of Your Desire: The most essential part of creative visualization is the feelings of your desire. Begin expanding on these feelings, making them feel rich, deep, and as real as possible. The more you can concentrate on your heart center and expand your feelings, the more potent your visualization will be.
- Rinse and Repeat: Do your visualization as often as needed until you feel you have embodied the feeling of your manifestation.
- Detach From the Outcome: When you are done embodying your manifestation, release expectations and detach from the outcome of your visualization.
How to Assure Success with Creative Visualization
In Shakti Gawain’s spiritual process, she explains that for creative visualization to work, three elements must form what we call intention.
- Desire: You must be clear about your manifestation and deeply desire it.
- Belief: You must believe your manifestation is possible.
- Acceptance: You must be able to accept your desire. This one is important because many of us, especially women, have trouble accepting and receiving our desires. We may want our desires consciously, but we block them subconsciously.
According to self-development expert Brian Tracy, visualization must have four elements: vividness, duration, frequency, and emotional intensity.
- Frequency: The first element is frequency, the number of times you visualize your manifestation.
- Duration: The second element is duration, the length of time you can hold the mental image in your mind each time you visualize.
- Vividness: The third element is vividness. The clearer your visualization, the faster your manifestation will arrive in your reality. At first, your mental image will be vague and fuzzy, but as you repeat your visualization and manifestation work daily, the mental picture will eventually become crystal clear.
- Emotional Intensity: The fourth and most crucial element is emotional intensity. The amount of emotion you can attach to the visual image of your goal determines whether it will come true.
3 Powerful Exercises to Support Creative Visualization

1. Meditation to Develop Focus and Concentration
The third eye meditation is simple for developing focus and concentration in the mind. To do the meditation, concentrate your attention on your third eye and silently repeat “om/aum” or a simple word you prefer, like “focus,” “love,” or “rise.”
Gently repeat the word without forcing or controlling the pace, rhythm, or your breath. You can also do the same meditation, but instead of focusing on the third eye, you focus on the heart center.
2. Countdown Relaxation Technique
An easy relaxation technique is counting backward from 100 to 0. This technique helps to relax and focus the mind.
Get comfortable and begin counting from 100 to 0. If any thoughts distract you, gently acknowledge them and refocus your mind back on counting backward.
If you prefer, you can also use this technique with your breath by counting each breath that naturally arises and counting backward from 100 to 0.
3. Exercise to Improve Visualization
Many manifestors have trouble seeing images in their minds’ eyes. This is perfectly normal. Some people have aphantasia, which I discuss more below.
However, you can improve your visualization abilities by tracing mental images in your mind’s eye.
Start by choosing a simple, not very detailed object, such as a cup, pen, leaf, or bowl.
Trace the object in your mind, and then, after you are done tracing the object, hold the entire mental image for a few seconds. Do this three to five times in one practice.
Then, practice as often as you like and move on to more complicated objects and imagery as you progress.
4 Creative Visualization Tips to Amplify Your Manifesting Practice

1. Allow Yourself to Dream and Play
If you are still determining what you want to manifest, you can use creative visualization to explore and imagine different possibilities.
Let yourself explore, dream, and have fun! Don’t hold yourself back or limit yourself to what you think is possible. The more you can have fun and bring in your childlike wonder, the more relaxed you’ll be, and ideas and inspiration will naturally come to you.
2. Infuse Positive Affirmations
Shakti Gawain recommends infusing affirmations into visualizations. Positive affirmations can amplify visualizations by adding more emotional intensity. They will likely arise organically when you become more comfortable with visualization.
Throughout the day, if you don’t have time to visualize again for a manifestation, you can gently repeat the affirmation in your mind to connect you to your visualization.
3. Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness is another way to help you become more aware of your energy and thoughts throughout the day.
It can help you see if you are aligned and embodying the end state of your manifestation.
If you are out of alignment with your manifestation, gently bring your energy back to the end state of your manifestation.
4. Limiting Beliefs and Self-Concept
Sometimes, when our manifesting practices aren’t working or we feel blocked, we can usually count on a deeply rooted limiting belief lurking in our subconscious.
If this is the case, doing deeper inner work, such as self-concept work, or identifying limiting beliefs to clear blocks and resistance towards your manifestation might be helpful.
Can I Still Use Creative Visualization if I Don’t See Images Clearly?
Yes, you can! Aphantasia is a non-threatening condition in which people are unable to see mental images in their mind’s eye.
It affects about 2 to 4% of the population and ranges from hyperphantasia, where the individual sees in technicolor (so jealous!), to aphantasia, where their images are dim or non-existent. They only see pitch black.
But have no fear. You can still visualize and manifest because the main idea of manifesting and creative visualization is to conjure up the emotional feeling of your manifestation. So, as long as your emotions are intense and realistic, your visualization will work.
Some people, like me, see dim imagery, but I have vivid, intense dreams. Everyone is different, so experiment and see what works for you.
You can also try focusing on your body and seeing if you can see images there. I can sometimes see vivid imagery when I bring my attention to my body.
