Want to know how to use affirmations to build true confidence?

True confidence comes from being comfortable in your skin. But how does one possess true confidence?

In this article, we’ll go over how you can overcome self-doubt and increase confidence using affirmations.

What is Confidence?

Struggling with self-doubt, self-esteem issues, and not feeling good enough is perfectly valid and normal. We all struggle with insecure feelings to some degree at various times in our lives.

However, when you lack confidence in a way that cripples your life, this can cause problems. Lacking confidence of this nature causes self-sabotaging behaviors, often leads to unhappiness, and blocks you from manifesting the life you truly dream of and desire

In my experience, there are two types of confidence.

The first kind of confidence is more of an overall confidence akin to a sense of well-being and self-acceptance. This confidence is foundational and is rooted in some form of fear, lack, or attachment trauma (relational bonding).

Here, the person can struggle with low self-esteem, self-rejection, and lack of self-worth. When we lack this kind of confidence, we subconsciously believe and feel that something is fundamentally wrong with us at a core level.

Also, we can lack confidence in one area of life, or we can lack confidence in all areas. You can heal fundamental confidence issues with self-love practices, affirmations, and help from a professional (psychotherapy, shadow work, life coaching, or spiritual healing.)

The second kind of confidence is when we embark on something outside our comfort zone. This kind of confidence is more about courage, overcoming fears, and believing in your abilities.

It gets worked through by doing and taking action. For instance, learning how to swim, public speaking, making new friends or even meditating. You just have to challenge yourself and take action to get better at the chosen skill.

And sometimes, embarking on a new challenge will unravel the fundamental confidence issues that a person may have.

Experiences and Behavioral Traits That Affect Confidence

  • Rigidity (reaction to shame)
  • Self-critical (being hard on yourself)
  • Overthinking (anxious and fearful thinking)
  • Perfectionism (black-and-white thinking, unrealistic expectations)
  • Self-worth (fundamental)
  • Self-esteem
  • History of childhood trauma
  • Experiencing hardships and grief
  • Judgment (moralizing)

What are Affirmations? And How to Use Them to Build Confidence.

Confidence comes from a combination of self-compassion, self-acceptance, facing your fears, taking action, and letting go of false beliefs.

A lot of us see ourselves through a distorted lens. Your beliefs and how you label yourself affect your well-being. Notice when you are not feeling confident. If you check in with your thoughts, you’re probably not being nice to yourself.

This is where affirmations come in.

Affirmations are short positive statements you say aloud, in your head, or write to overcome negative programming. Affirmations help you train yourself to think, feel, and act differently. With consistency, you can gradually change your self-image using affirmations.

Additionally, practicing affirmations in the morning and before bed can do wonders for your mood, raise your vibration, and improve your overall well-being.

There is scientific evidence that self-affirming rewires the brain. When we use affirmations correctly, our brain fires new neuro pathways, and our brain chemistry alters to fit our new beliefs.

Furthermore, for affirmations to work, we have to penetrate the conscious mind and work with our subconscious. The subconscious is on autopilot, connected to your emotional body, and stores your memories, habits, and beliefs. We spend 95% of our life in the subconscious mind. So, to work with affirmations correctly, always be sure to conjure up the emotional experience of the affirmation.

Tips to Work With Affirmations

  • Set about 10 minutes daily. The best times to work with affirmations are in the morning when you wake up, before bed, and after meditations.
  • Choose 3 to 5 affirmations below that resonates with you.
  • You can repeat affirmations in front of the mirror or in your head or try writing them out in a journal.
  • Take a few deep, slow breaths to relax and calm your mind and body before repeating or writing each affirmation.
  • Conjure the emotional feeling of the affirmation.
  • Repeat each affirmation ten times.
  • If you can, memorize the emotional experience and maintain the feeling throughout your day.
  • When you catch yourself reverting to the old negative feelings and thoughts, surrender the negative thinking and replace it with the positive affirmation in your head.

Also, try writing your own affirmations to make them more personal.
